Self catering holidays in Scotland with a dog

Pet-friendly holidays allow you to enjoy a holiday or short weekend break with your family, friends or other half and bring your dog with you too. The majority of the time when people go on holiday they aren’t able to take their pet because they are going aboard or their accommodation doesn’t allow pets. The pet-friendly option is becoming more popular with holiday homes across the country as companies realise that pet owners, particularly dog owners, want their dogs with them. It is always sad to leave your dog at home with a relative to be looked after whilst you go away and have fun. By booking a pet-friendly self-catering holiday, you will be able to have the best of both worlds.

pet-friendly log cabin holidays in scotlandThere are a number of holiday homes available that are within a close drive to Edinburgh but are located in a small rural town meaning you have tranquillity and peace surrounding your holiday home and easy access out. This gives you the best of both worlds as you are able to stay in the heart of the countryside whilst being in close proximity to the capital of Scotland. For example there are cottages situated in Arniston which is a 10 miles drive to the city centre of Edinburgh. There are cottages in this estate that sleep four to six people and are pet-friendly meaning you can book this for you and your family or group of friends. Herriott Watt University lies on the south west of Edinburgh and relatives visiting students studying at the university always need self-catering accommodation for visits, especially at weekends. Wouldn’t it be a joy if parents came visiting and brought the dog?

The location of these cottages are perfect as they are surrounding by rural countryside so you can enjoy long walks with your dog but also a short drive to Edinburgh if you wanted during the day. This means you and your family/friends can enjoy the outdoors each morning with the dog then head into the city for a day of fun then return back to a lovely cottage and enjoy the night there. If you go in summer then you can enjoy being outdoors and in the countryside late into the evening, have a BBQ and explore the Scottish hills. If it is winter then wrap up as the north gets very cold. On evenings you can enjoy the warmth of the traditional open fire and snuggle in front of the TV, these cottages are very popular for winter short breaks. Nearby to these cottages is a town called Gorebridge which is a 40 minute walk or 5 minute drive. This is the nearest town and offers a number of takeaway restaurants, the Stobsmill Inn pub and shops.

All holiday cottages have all the amenities you need to enjoy your holiday, stress free. Facilities could include Wi-Fi, bath and shower, open fire, laundry facilities. Pets are welcome and the cottages are an ideal for walkers and cyclists. The cottages are self-catering which is the case for many holiday homes and cottages in Scotland. Booking self-catering holidays allows flexibility on what and when you eat meaning you can eat out when you want or cook whenever you feel like it. Holiday homes are all equipped with clean, comfortable furniture for visitors allowing you to prepare and cook your own meals whenever you want although most holidaymakers would like to sample the local cuisine.

Edinburgh is one of the most popular cities to visit in the UK and if you are visiting Scotland for a holiday then Edinburgh is a must whether you’re staying nearby or not. Edinburgh is a very city that has a medieval old town and elegant modern new town which has the famous Edinburgh castle above the city. There are so many things to see and do in Edinburgh from the typical tourist spots such as Edinburgh castle and Calton Hill to Edinburgh zoo and the Royal Botanic Garden.

If you’re visiting with friends or your partner, over 18 and a fan of gin then the Edinburgh gin distillery is a must do. This distillery makes Edinburgh gin which can be bought around the UK in leading supermarkets and shops. If you’re a gin fan then seeing how your favourite spirit is made (along with some samples!) will be a perfect way to spend an afternoon in Edinburgh. And don’t forget to take a present home from the gift shop at the end.

Scotland’s other big city, Glasgow, is a treat of discovery. It is rich in culture, social history and offers some of the very best Indian restaurants anywhere. You may be staying in a holiday apartment or cottage but a visit to Glasgow is a must.   It is a fine city with a good shopping centre, museums, parks and nightlife. There are some superb pine lodges near Glasgow that are good for dog-friendly breaks and yet close enough for day trips to the city and lochs.

Stay in the Scottish Borders

If you live in the England are planning a Scottish holiday, you may prefer not to venture too far north. Most dogs do not like car travel so a cottage break in the Scottish Borders may be quite far enough.  The southern reaches of Scotland tend to feature a flatter terrain with low hills, rivers, forests and woodland. There may not be the dramatic mountain views of the Cairngorms but it is still a taste and encounter of the real Scotland.
