Luxurious dog-friendly cottages in the Forest of Dean

Forest of DeanHave you ever pondered going away for a few days on holiday, only to be held back by your pets? Now, that may sound like our beloved four-legged friends are a burden – but in fact, it is quite the opposite. The bond we share with our pets, particularly in the UK where we are immensely fond of our cats and dogs, makes it really difficult to leave them behind – even for a day at work! And this rings particularly true if we are unable to source somebody reliable for regular feeding and walks. Luckily, however, there is a rather simple solution: you can bring your pet (or pets) on holiday with you.

Now, bringing pets on holiday may not be something that has crossed your mind before, but it can actually be really easy. And if you’re stuck for ideas, one fantastically relaxing break you could do with your pet is a luxurious pet-friendly cottage getaway. If you do a little bit of online research, you’ll soon see that there are an abundance of cottage owners who are willing to invite both you and your pet into their luxury accommodation. And of all the great holiday spots in England, nowhere is this truer than beautiful Forest of Dean.

Set in the westernmost part of Gloucestershire, the Forest of Dean is a remarkable area of outstanding natural beauty, perfect for anybody who loves the countryside and the great outdoors. The area is also one of the United Kingdom’s surviving ancient woodlands – which means it has been a woodland area continuously since before 1600!

It’s probably no surprise that you are absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to walking routes in the Forest of Dean, then. This actually leads to it being something of a dog-walker’s paradise, which you’ll have to experience yourself to understand. Not only can you trudge through the hills and march alongside the river Wye with your favourite companion or companions, you can then retire to a luxurious cottage for food and the inevitable sofa snuggles, too. What’s not to love!

The Forest of Dean is also conveniently located near the Welsh border, as well as the major South West city of Bristol, which itself is a treat to visit. The Clifton Suspension Bridge and Ashton Court areas of the city are hugely popular with dog walkers, and provide some superb scenic walks. In addition, the city boasts heaps of pubs which welcome dogs into the warmth, so you can sample a real West Country cider while ‘your dog’ gets its breath back. (There is even a pub that welcomes cats, if the rumours are to be believed!)

If you do opt for a 5 star pet-friendly cottage holiday in the Forest of Dean, there are still a few things to bear in mind before booking. Firstly, you will need to check with your accommodation provider whether or not there is a charge per pet, as this could have a significant impact on your bill (especially if you have upwards of two furry friends). Secondly, you should make yourself aware of any house rules before booking. ‘Why’ you ask? Well, while you might not see a major issue with your cat or dog making a minor claw mark on a sofa, the accommodation provider might be of a different view. And this could result in a hefty fine for repair, or even a replacement.

Don’t be put off by house rules and potential additional fees, though – just be attentive. A luxury pet-friendly cottage break might just be the one you’ve been looking for all these years, while the Forest of Dean could turn out to be your dog’s new spiritual home. If you haven’t taken a holiday break in a cottage before, you’ll really appreciate the relaxing qualities that come with a characterful building standing amid the Great Britain’s glorious countryside. If you have booked cottage holidays before, on the other hand, you’ll know that you are in for a few days of sanctuary – and this is even truer if you go for a more luxurious choice that might include a hot tub, power shower and Wi-Fi. And regardless of your accommodation, it will be impossible not to have fun with in the wonderful Forest of Dean if you have your favourite companions with you.
